Pyasa.ca is Canada's first Indian DVD Rental, with an unparalleled inventory approaching 1,000 Indian films. The company was founded in 2004 as an online only venture out out of Markham, Ontario and is the ideal option for those wishing to watch Bollywood films, given limited availability at local video stores as well as online (though Zip and Canflix--which absorbed Hindiflix in 2006--have fair sized Indian inventories as well.)
Pyasa divides their inventory into 13 genres; Bollywood Masala, Mythology, Romance, etc. Each film has a lengthy synopsis in English, as well as stars, director, genre, sound format, language, subtitles, even music by and awards, though these are not hyperlinked nor are there customer reviews.
We particularly applaud their Promised Return system; once you have mailed you have put your discs back in the mail, email them and they'll send your next discs without waiting to acknowledge receipt of the last. This is something only larger companies usually offer, and it is refreshing to see this smaller, niche company using such a system as well.
We were impressed that for customer service contact they offered local Ontario as well as Toll Free numbers, mailing address, email, and webmail form on their site. Their FAQ notes that although their hours match Canada Post's and they're open 8:30-5:00 weekdays, they have been known to answer emails on the weekends as well.
Prices: Pyasa's prices are slightly higher than industry standard, as you'd expect for a niche operator offering a unique service to a smaller market. However, they really are quite reasonable, starting at $14.99 for an unlimited one DVD out, rising to $19.99 for two discs, and $24.99 for three discs. Unlike many companies however, they do not offer a free trial.
