Cine DVD Max has gone out of business, but we'll keep this review up for posterity.
Cine DVD max is based in Montreal, with a website in both English and French, though it does seem to be aimed at the French side, as the English side has many typos and misspellings.
They only have perhaps 3,500 titles, which isn't far off what a normal video store might stock, so there's little of the advantage that you usually get with an online company. Their customer relations and friendly staff are highly recommended. However, the site itself appears a bit simple; the categories section should already be expanded into the genres for instance, the Video Games link should be taken down as they no longer rent them, small things like that.
Instead of sending you movies individually, they mail out a single package with several dvds, which you watch and return in that same package before they send out another mailing the following week. This undoubtedly keeps postal costs down, though will naturally slow films down slightly. It's perfect for weekend DVD watchers though; see a couple films over the weekend, send them back on the Monday, and you'll have another batch ready for the following weekend. A gripe is they don't allow you to send some of the films back, only all from the same package. They claim that if you email them on the day you're returning the films, they'll email your next package on the next Friday without waiting to confirm receipt of the discs. While the early mail function is good, it seems a bit clumsy to handle manually by email, and it would clearly be better if such an early mailing were not delayed until the next Friday.
There are reports that as of early 2006 they were not purchasing new titles, and as of early 2007 the Best Rentals they listed were all 2005 or earlier films; this is something that will bear watching as failure to purchase new stock is often an early sign of a DVD rental company going under. In fact, the become new customer links appeared dead in January 2007, so it appears they are no longer accepting customers.
Prices: CineDVDMax do not offer a free trial. Their plans are on the cheap side, but are perhaps less of a value when the lesser functionality and range are factored in; 3 discs out for $21.95 and 4 discs for $24.95.
